The way I understood it is that Colin used Chancellor for laundering money.
Colin cannot sell what he does not own. If he did, it would be too bad for the person who bought it.

1) Jill: “I don’t know why but some people have compared me to the coronavirus epidemic.”
Chance: “Why, because you sweep into people’s lives out of the blue and wreck havoc everywhere?”
2) Jill: “Don’t laugh at me Chance. Just you wait in fifty years and see if your voice doesn’t sound like you have spent the last half century smoking, day by day, Cuban cigars.”
3) Jill: “My love life has become so desolate that after hearing about a recent breakup I am actually considering asking Mariah out on a date.”

What if Colin DID sell Chancellor Industries to Cane? That’s a great plot twist! Then Cane is Lily and Billy’s boss. You hit on something so fun. So many possibilities! Crossing fingers X
