I found this link to a web page which has a series of 14 full videos of “The Young and the Restless in 1993 the year Ali started watching the show. If you scroll down the page you will find the videos. You will note that each program was approximately 42 minutes long without commercial interruptions. There are an additional three videos from 1990. Enjoy while you can.

Thank you for find this Zoperplex. I can’t believe you found these. The first May 1993 episode has one of the episodes where Michael Baldwin is faking insanity that I was speaking about a few weeks ago. This is really cool to see again! I don’t think there is another episode with him in it that year as y&r never followed through with this great story line. Christian LeBlanc was the reason I had stopped watching at that time, as he was my favourite actor on the show and had left the show for many years. He is such a… Read more »
There has been a lot of commentary about how this decade or that decade had better production values but let me tell you that over the course of daytime drama history that pattern was never consistently true. If we go to the very roots of daytime drama on television there were few programs that were shot on a more shoestring budget. Back at the very beginning, in the fifties, soap operas were performed live. There was no such thing as editing. If a mistake happened, such as an actor flubbing his lines, or a camera bouncing over an misplaced cord,… Read more »
On summer vacation from pre-school(?) I was originally drawn to the half hour soap on videotape where there would be 3 blocks of action between commercials and the characters just talked at length about whatever, as pertained to their story. All heartfelt. Glamor not a prerequisite. And they didn’t quickly , slickly cut to another scene. That would come after the commercial. Those production values like elaborate sets and music came later as television evolved, but I never needed any of those to be drawn into the lives of the characters who became important to me. Even then, I was… Read more »
I know this is a little off topic but I thought that since we are rehashing “The Young and the Restless” history it might be enlightening to read about how the Paul Williams was introduced. He starts off by referring to the transition period when the show extended it running time to a full hour. It was definitely an awkward period, in just about every respect. If I remember right — and I may have missed an episode or two, of course — was that the introduction of the Williams family seemed fairly haphazard and sudden. There was a storyline… Read more »
I have a Paul Williams outline, but I can’t remember all these details. My recall is that Paul Williams was a callous, pleasure seeking, cocky townie youth who gave Nikki Reed (Erica Hope) VD. (What a crowd pleaser that was – imagine!) He was sporadically on the show for a time without a contract. I guess Y&R saw his potential, and one day he walked through the front door of his own family home and there were all his kin! (Maybe Carl Williams appeared at the police station before the others?) This was a family home over an actual, honest… Read more »
Whatever happened to Derek Thurston and Suzanne Lynch? Why was Katherine Chancellor called Thurston and how did Douglas become Victor’s manservant? Presumably a con artist would be the last person a big shot like Victor want as a manservant.
Brenda Dickson fell under the golden comb of Derek Thurston, but Kay produced her trump card and married him instead! She was now Katherine Chancellor Thurston. Derek’s ex Suzanne Lynch had short black hair and is remembered by people as she caused a lot of havoc in trying to get Derek back, but she wasn’t a long running character. She came & went. The one thing i remember of her crimes is putting a taranchella in Katherine Chancellor’s bed. Can’t remember how Derek left the canvas. I have zero recall of Douglas Austin beginning on Y&R in a crossover story… Read more »
Yes, it has been very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you Ali, for making me laugh out loud, your weekly Chat has gotten me through a difficult time. A very close family member passed away back in March during this whole pandemic, I loved her dearly, she was a year younger than myself. So for me, as I stated before I started watching Y&R back in 1978, I was hooked but I actually like the 90’s better because I was more of fleshed out adult by then and had some living under my belt. Also I know a lot of fans loved the character of John Abbott, but I… Read more »
I don’t know which decade of YR to pick as best. Some of the classic episodes remind me of the more outlandish stories of the past, which are not my favorites. However, the classic stories had follow through! They didn’t change on a dime. Perhaps it is the influence of social media now—the show gets pulled around by the whims of the Twitter comments? I hope the show returns with a firmer vision of where it is going and who the main characters truly are. End the whiplash!
I love your mention of Katherine and her teacup maneuvers!!! She should have received a lifetime achievement Emmy for best use of a prop by an actor. She made drinking tea from fine china look so dramatic and regal. Mesmerizing! Is that why I switched from coffee to tea years ago? Hmmmmm.
Hi Ali I know it seems terrible but if you want a small service pallbearers you leave the body at the church and it gets picked up by the morgue/cemetery people I don’t know which. It is not a common thing especially since I know people who always want a big service. I have been to one though where they kept it small and that is what they did.
