Fan week had so many great quotes: “I do have a functioning brain you know!” And “this is me smiling” were my favourites! In a previous week Jack said “oh god have I been an old clod?!” when talking to Ashley which I also liked!
I just adored “Fan Favorites” week on Y&R and I especially just loved watching Friday’s Y&R episode of Devon and Hilary’s wedding. Just magical!
I’m about to say something that may not sit well with people. I just got done watching the new episodes of Bold & Beautiful, CV19 compliant. If this is what Y&R is going to look like, we’d be better off starting Y&R from episode 3 and letting it run till the pandemic is over. Omg. The camera shots were ridiculous. Hand placement on the side of one’s face to block the fact they’re not kissing the actor, but their actual significant other. The constant cut aways with the camera is dizzying.
You’re kidding! I really was not expecting that! Dispite the 2 week incubation period everyone in a small scene has tested negative and you’d think the actors wouldn’t have to hide from each other. I appreciate the effort of everyone going back to work, but it is such a tricky dance and if the end results are looking ridiculous, maybe everything needs to further wait. I wonder if B&B recognizes their scenes as looking ridiculous as you do, Sandra. Ali will have watched these too and we’ll see what she says.
I can’t wait to hear what Ali has to say. If this were 1975, we’d think nothing of the awkwardness. But it’s modern times in CA and we can’t go backward technically. It’s cringy and uncomfortable.
Noooo! I totally didn’t see see your comment before recording Y&R Chat this week. I wish I could have included it!!! Nobody else even mentioned the B&B episodes!
To be fair, the scenes where they filmed the actors from across the room were pretty normal, save for the fact that everyone is noticeably far apart. Any scene where the actor/actress is close to another, is when the constant cutting away with the camera happened. (You’ll see, for example Wyatt trying to rescue Flo you see Wyatt race toward Flo whose tied to a radiator, but the action stops and the next thing on screen is Wyatt’s hands trying to undo the restraint, same with Ridge in the hospital room with Steffie) In other words there was no panning… Read more »
I read on some soap sites that one soap is using blow up dolls. I hope Y&R doesn’t do that. That make is look cheap & lame. I definitely wouldn’t not enjoy a makeout session like that. I’m enjoying most of the classics IF they could actually stick to a theme & follow some episodes in order or at least a storyline! When Hillary & Devon’s wedding happened I wanted to know who walked in because I never saw that before. When Michael dug into Christine’s I wanted to see what happened. Those would have been good as a 2… Read more »
We finally get the see the Dive bar again. I was thinking it would have been good to show it when it was summer fun week. There were quite a few episodes Y&R could have shown with that set, including the 4th of July and the one where there was a d.j and dancing. It was one of their best sets for summer time.
I never liked that detective Harding was the mysterious killer that killed Austin, Tobias and Courtney. Ali, you have mentioned how you think Y&R sometimes doesn’t know where they are going with a story line and just decides at the last minute what to do with it. This is definitely one of those times. I am positive that was never the plan when Y&R first started this story line. Detective Harding was probably the last person they planned on being the killer. I thought that was such a waste of a great character. I would have liked to see his… Read more »
Even though Paul claimed Tobias Gray was murdered his death was originally attributed to a car accident which occurred during a snowstorm. There must have been something uncovered between then and the show which indicated that the car had been tampered with. That would make sense because, as I recall, it was presumed that it had been Tobias Gray who planted Sharon’s fingerprints on the tire iron. Immediately following the accident the police began a search of Gray’s apartment and there they discovered a fingerprint kit. If, as we now know, it was Harding who planted the fingerprints on the… Read more »
I agree ,He would have been a good addition to Paul’s detectives. ThAT whole storyline didn’t make sense
Woah, wait a minute. Is Jack Abbott wearing a PURPLE TIE?!
Katherine giving Jill some much needes advice about Jeffery was so perfectly honest and kind. I love and miss when they were mother and daughter.
They were so good together, whether they were being nice or bickering. Really miss that twosome
FOR Y&R FACT FINDERS: Who came 1st to Genoa City? The Bride, Drucilla Barber, or the groom, Neil Winters? About the same time?
(Neil was an island to himself with no family, but Drucilla at least had her aunt Mamie. To this day fans are still trying to link certain characters to a secret Aunt Mamie parentage with zero results.)
Drucilla Barber was there first.
TIMELINE: As is known, Y&R, although supposedly new and daring in 1973, nevertheless moved at a slow pace wallowing in characterization and moody indulgences over action. The focus of the show, “cherry” Chris Brooks’ romance with both laid back and intense Snapper is remembered with affection, but as, kind of, tedious and draggy, at least to me… Only it wasn’t! Most people won’t be interested in this so I’ll make the point quick: Y&R began in the first quarter of 1973 where Chris fell in love with the difficult Snapper and set about to obtain him. In that time they… Read more »
Isn’t it amazing that the more sweet and naive a female character is the more likely that character is forced to endure one tragedy after another. It is like these writers have a sadistic streak in them to make the meek and humble suffer solely because these characters are so obstinately good. Another fact is that not withstanding the psychological damage these characters must go through they still end up with as much a sunny a disposition as when they started. It is as if these set backs had no effect on them. Thus Chris still insisted on marrying Snapper… Read more »
Zoperxplex, seriously, you have hit on the ultimate theme. Every soap opera is, or was, based around the virtuous good girl having everything known to man thrust in her way on the road to personal happiness and fulfillment. No damsel worth her name is anywhere without this factor. It is The Perils Of Paulene concept of the heroine tied to the railroad tracks with the audience tearing their hair out hoping she might be rescued just in the nick of time. A favorite, Alexandra Moltke, Victoria Winters from Dark Shadows was just about to be hung as a witch having… Read more »
I wish they had stuck with the original episodes in sequence until they had new material to air. I was drawn in by the first 2. Now we are back to jumping around like grasshoppers and I’m back to barely paying attention unless something special to me really piques my interest.
I only have so much brain power to jump around and find my bearings. I am not a rocket scientist. Well, I kind of am…
I don’t know what your day job is, but you are a YR scientist. You and Dr. Z and Ali, Queen of all good & funny YR things.
You are the Y&R secretary of witticisms & telling it like it is. In a year Ali will set you up in your own office – maybe. All Adam inquiries go by your desk… Its a tough job but somebody’s got to do it.
Or if you don’t want the desk job, you could get yourself directly appointed to Secretary of Defense – of Adam.
Thank you very much.
I feel the exact same way. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two episodes.
Episode 2 began to rock a little bit…
Sorry I went on a tangent and failed to answer your question but no, I do not think that was fast, at least not in contemporary terms. Today, as you know, marriages come and go at the drop of a hat. Back then I guess you could say that was fast because, as you have stated, storylines could drag on for a year or longer. You would have thought that logically Chris needed a good period of time to sought out her feelings; a traumatic experience such as sexual assault will make any victim reassess her estimation of men in… Read more »
Yes. In modern soap times the cycle I described would not be fast but long! Viewers have short attention spans and there are 2843 compeating channels to choose from. Let’s get to the point! But in 1973….
I watched the first two shows but found them dated and boring. I didn’t know any of the characters and it dragged. Glad Y&R is better today
You are probably in the majority.
I disagree that it is better today. I started watching about five years after the show began and to me the storytelling was more fleshed out. The writers today will start a story and then drop it, introduce characters and fail to provide a complete background on them or just bring someone in that seems to have traction and they are gone the next day and I don’t want to sound cruel, but no one can last forever, if they want this type of genre to continue, they need to start telling compelling stories for their younger characters.
I’m not sure why but I just never connected with Hilary. The actress is excellent, but the character leaves me cold. Too much of a user I guess. Ambition is fine, but she was horrible to people, especially Mariah. And I hated what she did to Neil.
I disliked her too when she was busy trying to ruin Mariah’s career on “GC Buzz”, later “The Hilary Hour” (remember when that guy from “Married with Children” was that show’s producer?). After I found out she was Phyllis’s best friend I made a complete 180° turn on her.
I only got as far as lukewarm to Hilary. Friday’s episode did not make me nostalgic for the Hilary era. I respect the love that others have for the character though. Mishael is quite an actress.
Hilary was one of those baddie types that for some reason the audience decided to forgive and like.
Do you like Amanda better? I didn’t watch all the Hillary years but I did like her some of the time
So far Amanda is not developed enough as a character for me to have an opinion. Mishael Morgan could handle a BIG story. But I worry about this writing team! Will they ever get it together??? They have had a nice long break to figure things out. I’m cautiously optimistic & hoping for consistency and commitment to storylines when the show returns.
I was not a fan of Hillary either, don’t need to see any more classic episodes with her
This is the second time Colin tired blackmailing Devon.
Sharon was nearly run over the night that Austin was killed, when the Scooby Doo gang celebrated Valentine’s Day at the Abbott cabin. She witnessed someone in the car (Detective Harding) tossed something out of the car (the murder weapon). When she recounted that evening to Dylan he scoured that area and came across the tire iron. Harding had planted Sharon’s fingerprints on the iron.
Dylan came over a tire iron with Sharon’s fingerprints that was used to kill Austin.
Gina Tognoni’s Phyllis was soooooo much more mature than Michelle Stafford’s.
Yeah, but what about Brenda Dickson?
I like her much more so than Jess Walton. Ms. Walton sounds like she could use a good throat lozenge.
I like Jess better, Especially in her later years as a more veterann
character
Yes I agree, Gina is more mature and I like Michelle in the role but not when she goes over the top, she does some crazy schemes, but she can be serious too not so cartoonish
This was a rare occasion where Lily was not dressed as foxy as Lauren.
