This week, Katherine’s last words for Jill are revealed, the music box mystery has (finally) been solved, and 40 year old scars are uncovered. Y&R Chatter, Daisy, sent me a video clip that had me searching for more footage about the Katherine, Jill, Phillip triangle. Unfortunately, there is so little available for such a pivotal story in Y&R’s history! In fact, I could not find one single clip highlighting the love story between Phillip and Jill. I, however, was able to find a few other moments from around that time, so I thought I’d share them here. Enjoy!

In the hospital, Phillip married Jill (which Katherine had annulled), then died from his injuries.
Y&R’s artistic (dark background) Hollywood lighting was much talked, written about in the beginning. Previously, all the soaps had been brightly light like the hoping up and down radishes are on LETS MAKE A DEAL. Like the analogy of the early characters appearing as if suspended in a surreal nightmare.
Those scenes presenting the flashbacks of Jill’s hospital visit following the “accident” pretty much illustrates the look of “The Young and The Restless” in its early years. Not alot of mise-en-scene; very dark and spartan. It was as if the characters were suspended in some surreal nightmare.
YES! That’s one of the reasons I found Y&R so appealing when I started watching in the 90’s. It was visually darker and looked so much different than any of the other daytime shows. Looking back at the old clips, it’s even more so. Very surreal, as you said.
