I’m on the fence but after seeing the Ashland scene where he was almost in tears after telling Victoria he knew about the clinic in Peru I’m leaning towards his side. Very good acting there. I need his goatee gone though because no matter what I do he looks like a dad to Victoria rather than a husband. I didn’t feel like that too much with Richard Bergi. They were easier to see as a romantic couple. Richard came off as warm but Robert comes off as cool with meaness just under the surface (the way everyone was describing the… Read more »

I think it is intentional for new Ashland to be the Lochness Monster. That’s why they continued on with his character. Richard Bergi never got to that aspect of Ashland’s character. He had better chemistry with Victoria though. I agree Robert looks more like her father than her husband.

Robert Newman is doing an excellent job with the business side of Ashland’s character. He’s commanding, cool and calculating. However, he misses the mark on the personal side. He’ll have to grow into the role to add charm, warmth and connection. I see no chemistry between Ashland and Victoria right now. Thus, when his ultimate betrayal of Victoria comes out, it will not have the emotional impact that it would have with Richard Burgi. I hope they wait long enough for Robert Newman to develop the connection he needs, so that we can all enjoy the drama.

I love how he showing the smug, calculating side of Ashland. I think it would be nice to have a romantic scene at home with him and Victoria and maybe a scene with him video chatting Harrison so we can see the softer side of the Lockeness Monster.

I gave Robert Newman a “thumbs up.” I knew he would be great in his portrayal of Ashland Locke for several reasons. He is a seasoned Soap Star. He actually could pass in real life (my opinion) as Burgi’s biological brother. Given the fact that I was an avid Guiding Light Fan (where Robert was a key actor there as “Josh Lewis” for many years) It will take me some time to accept him as Ashland and not as Josh Lewis. But then, it took me some time to accept the “New Victoria” when Heather Tom moved on to the… Read more »

It’s funny Ali that you would say you’d like to see a softer, smiling side to Robert Newman’s portrayal of Ashland. Not in the ha ha funny way, but in the ironic kind of way. Robert Newman as Josh Lewis on Guiding Light was a business man, but when I think back to his character on the show, all I see is his charming, handsome face, always smiling. I even made a note to myself when I saw RN the first couple of days on Y&R thinking he looks stern.

Actually impossible to do a complete thumbs up or down at this point but I gave the new dude a thumbs down because the real Ashland is nicer, more pleasing looking which makes Victoria falling for him easier to believe. Robert Newman is naturally more agressive in all that he says and does. I’m sure RN is a good actor but he seems more stereotypical of a hard edged businessman than the more subtle Richard Burgi. I believe subtlety is what we’re always going for. (as Bob Newman turns on the charm with flowers and jewelry we know it is… Read more »

I agree, I liked Richard Burgi charm and sophistication, it was believable that Victoria felt for him. I don’t see it now, it completely destroyed my love for this couple.

Yes, I think even if you like Robert Newman the chemistry between Ashland & Victoria has been thrown off with their dance with the audience gone south, at least for now.

Timepass, I see your point and I must admit that Burgi and Victoria seemed a better fit as a couple. Hopefully the right scenes in the future will make them more acceptable as a couple. I think the “jury is still out” on that scenario.

Robert Newman… Don’t know anything about him. Starting out he seems okay. Seem anxious in his part, almost jumping the gun with his lines. Shouldn’t take him any time to get settled in.

So far, so great! Before the cast change, Ashland seemed to be “playing” at his new identity and even rather ashamed of it (or at least ashamed at being outed). R.Newman gives the impression of the not-real Ashland having fully embraced his new persona and being darn proud of it. R.Burgi never gave any feels for the supposed dormant LNMness being at the surface, while R.Newman seems simmering w/it. This new actor seems as though he could hold his own and/or surpass Victor in their chess match… while up until now, Ashland seemed almost intimidated by Victor. Granted, some of… Read more »

And, add to my comment – think Ashland and Ashley.

Wow, I love that pairing idea! It would be so great to have Ashley back as a regular (and of course, onky as played by E.Davidson.) I think she might be the 1st choice on my “bring-back character list”… it would hilarious if Victor exposed enough of Ashland’s dirty doings that led to breaking up Ashland and Victoria, only to have Ashland then move on w/Ashley. But alas, doubt we’ll ever get that…

I think Robert Newman is good in this role. He is a good actor, and not silly, which Ashland is not.. His character on another soap was serious and honest in a family of show-offs and deal-makers (Oklahoma oil business). He will make Ashland believable, and maybe show a maturity to evenly match Victor, and not be sidekick to Victoria.

RE: A podcast comment about Kim Zimmer coming to Y&R. Kim Zimmer is amazing. She and Robert Newman were a power couple. Robert Newman is subtle, prime time. Most GL actors are not exactly compatible with Y&R style. Maura West was on for a bit as Diane, for example. Maybe a KZ cameo? Ashland’s therapist at that clinic?

I voted that Robert Newman is doing a good job so far. It’s funny his real name is Newman lol. Hope they give him enough to do. Is he faking his illness? I doubt it, he had symptoms when no one was looking. But he did buy the clinic so he could get treatment right away and he is probably in remission now. He might really love Victoria but not certain of that, maybe just wanted to merge the companies

Actually regarding when Ashland seemed to have medical episode and he was alone. He wasn’t really. If you actually paid attention. Someone always popped up, just as Ashland was having a moment. I think he sensed they were coming and played up his illness.
