I think Matt knows what he is doing, and his revenge on Nick is, having terrorized Sharon, and since he is not that person any more, he won’t terrorize, he will seduce Phyllis, another of Nick’s loves. Matt will smirk at Nick, “gotcha.”
Being around Matt makes Phyllis seem desperate. We know she is insecure, but desperate is not a good thing for her. Someone said if Nick would just tell her, yes he is jealous and wants her, she would not even remember Matt.
